KHASRA METHOD - 1858 to 1865

Boundaries of only quadrilateral survey fields were measured. if the shape was irregular, the field was divided into quadrilaterals or triangle and the sides of these measured. in some cases, the diagonals of the quadrilaterals were also measured. Subdivisions were measured by the settlement department. Sketch of survey fields showing measurements were prepared but these were often incomplete. Village maps were prepared on a traverse basis.

TRIANGLE FROM 1866 to 1887

Measurements were taken from stone to drive each survey field into triangles. In 1877, Surveyors were permitted to taken offsets to stone at bendd less then 50 links from a line between any other two stones, but this was not done to any appreciable extent. Sub-Division were measured by the Settlement department.Village maps were prepared on a travelse basis.

SIMPLE TRIANGLE SYSTEM - 1866 to 1887

In this system, the traverse was plotted as the Skeleton on witch the village map was picked of by dots using pins and pencil on two sheets each coutaining about 160 acres on the 40" scale, the size of a plane table head as used in the Madras Survey. The plane table was replaced by the D&O system in the Madras Presidency. Boundary of survey fields were sketched onto this sheet as demarcation progressed. The sides of the triangles formed by the Theodolite station were measured and offsets taken to all filed marks. Measurement were entered on the sheets. The outer boundaries of fields containing subdivision were also measured and the subdivisions divided into quadrilaterals and triangles and measured. Measurement of these were preserved in a record colled the subdivisions interstitial field book.

BLOCK SYSTEM -1891 to 1896

Theadolite station were fixed at tri-junctions and at other points to from blocks of about 160 acres. These were plotted on 40" scale. Thes blocks were divided into large triangles and the boundaries of survey fields and subdivisions fixed by offsets from the sides of the triangles. All the measurements taken were entered on the block sheets. Village maps were formed by superimposing reduction of the blocks maps on the traverse skeletons.

PUNGANUR SYSTEM of SURVEY

This was followed from 1914 to 1916. Its name was derived from the Zamindari estate in Chittoor District, in present Andhra Pradesh. It was the first estate surveyed using this method. A single diagonal line was run across each survey field. Field bends were offsets on this line.

In the Punganur System, the frame work for each survey fields is obtained by runing a single diagonal right through the field and offsetting every field and sub-division from this line.

NATHAM SURVEY of 1987

Government of Tamil Nadu have sonoctioned the survey of Natham sited and the agricultural lands used for non-agricultural purpose in the State of Tamil Nadu on G.O.From 117,O.T&R.E., Department 31.10.87.

During the Natham settlement scheme natham house site lands measured and natham settlement patta issued in more than 16 thousand Revenue villages in the whole state.
